How It All Began
As part of the Spencer Lions Club service project Santa would visit the Owen County Courthouse for picture with children and crafts. In 2009 the serve project was expanded to include a simple Christmas Parade and Lighting Ceremony for the Courthouse Dome. Now in 2013, we are growing to include an all day event called Christmas at the Square.
Christmas at the Square is a hometown Christmas festival located at the Owen County Courthouse Square. Area organizations, businesses, and individuals come together to organize the festival under the Spencer Lions Club service project for our community and guest of our community. The holidays are a heartwarming time of year and how better to celebrate than with family, friends, and community.

As part of the Spencer Lions Club service project Santa would visit the Owen County Courthouse for picture with children and crafts. In 2009 the serve project was expanded to include a simple Christmas Parade and Lighting Ceremony for the Courthouse Dome. Now, we are growing to include an all day event called Christmas at the Square.
The Spencer Lions Club also generously donates the funds needed to pay the electric bill of having the courthouse dome lights on!
Also the week following the Christmas at the Square the Spencer Lions Club hosts Santa in the evenings for children to visit the Lions Club on Main St and have their pictures taken.
The Spencer Tivoli (under the operation of Owen County Preservation) host a FREE movie at 10:30a and 11:15a during the Christmas festival. The Tivoli also offers a variety of holiday movies and special events during December. Some of the upcoming specials include It’s a Wonderful Life, the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, A Christmas Story, and a live production from the Owen County Civic Theatre. Spencer Evening World always has his camera in hand to capture the memories of children visiting and sharing their wishes with Santa during the courthouse activities from 1-4. Orders for prints can be places at the Spencer Evening World beginning Dec 7th.
Delta Theta Tau offers “reindeer dust” as part of the courthouse activities of the festival. Each year the Delta Theta Tau members hand out a package of oats & sparkles. Children are instructed to sprinkle dust on lawn and the reindeer will find their home by seeing sparkles. As Santa delivers the gifts his reindeer will have a special treat by eating the oats.
Owen County Garden Club offers a craft project for children & adults to make when the visit the courthouse during the festival.
Members of Alpha Delta Chapter of Tri Kappa hand out free books to children. This year member of the Alpha Delta Chapter of Tri Kappa will hand out books to children starting at 10a at the Tivoli before the Charlie Brown Christmas movie.
The Owen County Public Library will be hosting story time in the Courthouse during the festival. A variety of books are selected by the library and then children may join in as a librarian reads aloud to the children.
The Owen County 4H Fishing Team hosts a Christmas Carnival each year for the public. The Christmas Carnival has a variety of games for children to play as instructed by members of the Fishing Team. Visit the In God’s Arms (IGA) building from 12-2p for the FREE Carnival. The Owen County 4H Fishing Team also provides the Live Nativity at the festival.
The coloring contest page has been drawn by youth artist, Israel Hogan. Israel’s parents, Josh & Brianne Hogan, have recently opened the shop Main Street Coffee location on Main Street in Spencer where art by Israel is featured along with other handcrafted items by family members, coffee, and goodies are available.
Rob Babbs of Babbs Supermarket invites Santa to leave reindeer at the store while he visits with children downtown. From 11a to 2p the public can visit with reindeer at Babbs Supervalu.
Area 10 Agency, Boston Scientific, Owen Valley Health Campus, and Sweet Owen Industries offer goodies from hot drinks to windshield scrappers to visitor of the festival.
Shop local by stopping by a small business while they host open houses during the festival.
The Owen Valley Fire Department volunteers to set up and remove the courthouse dome lighting each year.
Spencer Exchange Club members sell fresh cut Christmas trees at the lot next to Babbs Supervalu starting after Thanksgiving. Spencer Exchange Club also donated the cash prizes for window decorating contest.
Indiana Limestone Fabricators is sponsoring the face painter during the courthouse activities. Thanks to the sponsorship children may do face painting for free.
While the weather does affect Verl & Debbie Keith being able to offer carriage rides at the festival. Each year they plan to be available. Let’s hope folks can hear those sleigh bell jingling as they come together for a sleigh ride together.
